These are the opening lines of a 1948 poem by Father David Maria Turoldo — words of such quiet devastation that the Italian photographer Mario Giacomelli borrowed them as the name for one of the most extraordinary photographic series of the 20th century.

The photographs are disarming: young Episcopal seminarians at the Seminary of Senigallia, captured in states of joyous, unconventional movement — glissading through snow in their black woolen cloaks, pillow fighting, dancing in circles. The weight of their vocation contrasted with the lightness of their youth. The solitude of sacred life, broken open by a moment of pure humanity.

Filippo Sorcinelli knew Giacomelli personally, and carried the photographer's soul within his own.
